Areas of Practice
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy can help people who would like to get more out of life and live life more fully. One major focus of individual treatment is to help clients identify and develop the parts of themselves that are holding them back. Treatment would also include increasing an individual’s ability to cope better with the stresses in his or her life. The goal of therapy is not to solve problems for clients, but rather to help clients discover their inner resources so that they can better help themselves. It is an opportunity for them to learn about themselves so that they can manage their lives more effectively and discover new possibilities for growth and development.
Adolescents Therapy
Adolescence can be a particularly difficult time, during which young people move from childhood to adulthood. The transition brings physical, social, and emotional changes, and even when life is relatively stress free, it can be a challenging experience. In addition, the adolescent brain is still developing. Therefore, teens don’t have the emotional or cognitive ability to easily identify and verbalize what is going on inside of them, often leading them to act out their feelings instead. When adolescents experience trauma or increased stress such as parental or family discord, bullying or social difficulties, peer pressure, a death or illness in the family, or other major life stressors, they may show their feelings of fear, sadness, and anger by changing their behavior, usually negatively.
Therapy can be an opportunity for adolescents to process their thoughts and feelings in a safe place so that they can learn more effective ways of interacting with their environment and develop a good set of coping skills. It’s also an opportunity for them to explore and bring together their ideas about their own identity, as this is an important task at this stage of their development.
Couples Therapy
People generally want to be in a relationship that feels meaningful and where there is a deep connection between partners. Couples therapy can help couples improve their relationship, strengthen their connection, and increase intimacy and closeness. Couples counseling can also help individuals in a relationship better understand one another, recognize patterns in their relationship, and help each person see the perspective of his or her partner. When both partners are committed to working on their relationship, the therapy can help each of them better understand themselves and their partner, let go of old hurts and unnecessary expectations, and rebuild trust. With the guidance of a therapist, and in a safe environment, couples can learn the skills needed to improve their communication, resolve conflict, and clarify each person’s needs and how these needs can be met.
Parenting
Parenting is one of the most rewarding and challenging jobs a person can undertake. Parenting involves caring for the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of one’s child. It’s an awesome responsibility! Parents may be challenged by a variety of issues as they raise their children from bedtime struggles and toilet training to backtalk and defiance by their teens. These issues can lead to frustration and sometimes distance between parents and their children. Sometimes parents need guidance to help them with these and other challenges. Speaking with a therapist can help parents explore their strengths and weaknesses and what may be missing in terms of their parenting style. A therapist can provide parents with guidance, information, support, and strategies to help them overcome their parenting struggles and help parents once again feel close and connected to their children.
